Should I stay in Deer Valley or Park City?

Deer Valley is located within the municipality of Park City (think of Deer Valley as a suburb of Park City).  You can get between Park City and Deer Valley in 5 - 10 minutes by car or the free, highly efficient, extremely punctual, Park City bus transit system that covers both Park City and Deer Valley.

Staying in Deer Valley

If you will be doing the majority of your skiing at Deer Valley Resort we would recommend that you stay at a ski-in/ski-out Deer Valley location.  It's a 5 - 10 minute car or free Park City bus ride to Park City as well as Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons.

Upper Deer Valley, the nicest section of Deer Valley, is where Deer Valley Resort's Silver Lake Lodge is locatedUpper Deer Valley is located about half way up the Deer Valley Resort mountain.  In the Silver Lake Lodge area there are several ski rental companies.  As well, there are a number of superb restaurants and shops.  Upper Deer Valley also has a Deer Valley Resort ticket office.

Staying in Park City

Staying in Park City means you can be ski-in/ski-out to Park City Mountain Resort (if you stay at a ski-in/ski-out location) and at the same time you can be right next to the majority of restaurants, shops, galleries, coffee shops, etc. in an authentic western silver mining town dating back to the 1800's.

Many people like having everything at their fingertips and choose to stay in Park City while others prefer to be away from the "hustle/bustle" of "town" (if that's the right word when no building is over about 3 stories) and would rather be "up in the woods and quiet" of Deer Valley.  If you are in Park City, you are also a 5 - 10 minute car or free Park City bus ride to Deer Valley Resort or The Canyons.

When considering Park City, don't confuse staying in Park City with staying at Park City Mountain Resort.  The Park City Mountain Resort has its own built up "resort town/area" at the bottom of the main ski lifts/runs.  This is not the "charming" Park City, but rather the center of the ski resort (a typical western "ski resort village").  Many people prefer to stay along Main Street in the heart of the original Park City where, if they are staying at one of the Park City ski-in/ski-out locations, they can have the best of both worlds (ski-in/ski-out and great access to all the great restaurants, shops, etc.).

What are your thoughts on the skiing and amenities at Deer Valley Resort, Park City Mountain Resort, and The Canyons?

First of all, realize that you have three world class ski resorts within 10 minutes of each other.  This question is not going to be your biggest dilemma of your trip!  The bigger issue you will have to deal with is which of the ~100 restaurants you are going to eat in given that you are only in town for a week or so!

If you are going for a week and this is your first trip, you may want to consider trying each of the three resorts.  One CRITICAL thing for people who are going snow boarding is to know that snow boarding is only allowed at Park City Mountain Resort and The CanyonsSnow boarding is not allowed at Deer Valley Resort.  If you are a skier, you may really like this idea and specifically only want to ski at Deer Valley Resort.

All three resorts have absolutely awesome skiing whether you are a beginner looking for something easy, or are a double-black diamond skier and want to ski off a cliff.  Please note, if this is your first ski trip out west and you are worried that you are not an expert skier, do not be worried or intimidated.  Yes, these are the Rockies.  Yes, Utah has the Greatest Snow on Earth®. But all three resorts have a huge and extensive selection of trails for all levels including "bunny slopes" for beginners that go for miles through gorgeous wooded areas with wide open trails and unbelievable mountain vistas.

Finally, regarding Deer Valley, a special mention must be made about Deer Valley Resort's unbelievable service, attention to detail, and food (yes, we are calling special attention to food at a ski resort!).  Deer Valley Resort consistently wins top ranks year-after-year in these categories.  If you pull up to the lodge, they help you get your skis off the car.  If you go for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the food is outstanding.  If you want to ski Deer Valley Resort, please make sure to call ahead to Deer Valley and make a "ski reservation" during peak periods (e.g., New Year's, Presidents' Week, etc.).  Think of it as just like making a dinner reservation.  If you don't show up, you are not going to get charged, but if you don't have a reservation, you can't get a table (or in this case, a lift ticket).  This is very important during weekends and holidays (including Christmas, New Year's, and Presidents' Week).

Is there a ski school that you would recommend for my kids?

Yes, as a matter of fact, there is.  We highly recommend Deer Valley Resort's ski school for young kids learning to ski.  No, we do not get a referral fee for saying this -- it's where we send our kids to ski school! Deer Valley Resort's ski school does an absolutely outstanding job.  If you have a really young child (the youngest they will take kids is 3 years old and yes, they must be potty trained!) please make sure to bring your camera with lots of film (whether that's traditional film or a large sized memory card!).  When they have all the kids together in ski school all wearing the Deer Valley uniforms it's a picture you won't want to miss!

How do I maintain my healthy lifestyle?

Remember to wear a lot of sunscreen when you are outside.  At the higher altitude with the very clear skies that prevail, it's very easy to get sunburned.  If you are from out east, this is all very hard to believe, but take our word for it, put on the sunscreen.

The humidity is very low in the winter and summer.  Add to that heating in the buildings, and you are in for some very dry air.  It's highly advisable to use a good body and facial moisturizer each and every day to keep your skin from being too dry.  Related to the above mention of sunscreen, you may want to use a good moisturizer with built in SPF sun protection.

Remember to wear a good lip balm (i.e., ChapStick) with a high SPF rating for protection from the sun (see the point above).

Drink a lot of water.  You are at a high altitude in a dry climate and it's easy to get dehydrated at any time of year.  Keep hydrated!

You are at a high altitude (Main Street in Park City is at about 7,000 feet and when skiing, you can get as high as nearly 10,000 feet).  Please keep in mind if you live at a lower altitude, you will notice the difference even walking quickly up a flight of stairs.
